St. John Brebeuf Standardized Test Scores Update - May 2011

The Terra Nova is the standardized test that the schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago use. The Terra Nova uses a theme based format with the majority of the questions having multiple choice answers. However, at the end of each section of the test, including Math and Science, there are questions that require a written answer from the students. These answers were scored on content, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

As a school we did well on the tests and scored well above the national midpoint (which is at the 50th percentile) in every area. These scores are helpful to us because they enable us to help individual children and to evaluate the effectiveness of our programs.

Below is a table of St. John Brebeuf Median National Percentiles by subject and grade level. If you compare your child's test results with his/her grade level Median Percentile for each subject area, you can determine how he/she scored in comparison withh his/her class. For example, the third grade median percentile in reading is 80, which means 50% of our students scored above 80 and 50% scored below 80. The National Percentile is 50. If, for example, your child scored a 75 in seventh grade reading, his/her score is below the norm for St. John Brebeuf, but well above the norm of 50.

Another way to view our students' achievements is through the performance index of our own students at St. John Brebeuf School. The following scores are the percentage of our students who scored above the national average of 50%. These percentages include only our students in that particular grade level within each discipline. For example, 100% of our sixth grade students scored above the national norm in reading. Not one student scored below the national norm.
