Curriculum

The curriculum of the preschool is based on the Illinois Early Learning Standards and designed to give our learners a broad background in cognitive and sensory experiences, pre-reading and pre-math skills and small and large muscle skills necessary for success in their future school years.  In addition, much opportunity for socialization will be provided.

Our daily routine includes an Opening Time of conversation and prayer.  Guided by the Illinois Early Learning Standards, the children are presented with a cross-curricular theme of interest that will be experienced and enhanced in the learning centers throughout the room.

Following this is Center or Activity Time.  The children are allowed about an hour to work in the various activity centers set up for their explorations.  The class is broken up into three groups where math, science, and language arts concepts are explored by hands-on use of age appropriate materials.  Our room has a Bible center, a Blocks and Building corner, a Science and Discovery center, a large area for stories and language arts, computers, playdoh and sand tables, math and manipulatives tables, a large dramatic play area, a corner for music and movement, a writing center, a large art area including easel painting, a cart full of creative art materials, and a table for special craft projects.  The purpose of these centers is to encourage role playing, imagination, building, creating, observing, and experimenting using both cognitive and sensory skills. They can also experience the joys of music and the written word.  Again, the value of play must be emphasized.  It is the most effective way young children learn.

Group Time comes next.  This is a time to reinforce the wide range of experiences and activities being explored throughout the room that help prepare the children for what they should be able to learn, know, and do before they start Kindergarten.

Outdoor or Gym Time follows. Here the children develop their large muscles and coordination and get some fresh air, exercise, and have an outlet for their energy.  Social skills are developed also.

Next the children use the washroom before Snack Time followed by a limited choice of activities such as reading books, journaling, using language arts manipulatives, and floor puzzles.

Story and Music Time finishes our day.  Stories, singing, fingerplays, dancing, and creative dramatics are experienced here.

The goals of our curriculum are to develop and reinforce age-appropriate skills and concepts in each child.  We aim to help your child become increasingly independent and use initiative in pursuing interests.  We aim to develop in your child a positive self-concept and self-confidence.  We hope your child will feel comfortable in relationships with adults and enjoy playing with other children and alone.  We hope to foster cooperation and acceptable conflict resolution.  We aim to develop attention span and encourage persistence in completing a task.  We will plan activities to help your child express ideas through oral language and drawings.  We hope to challenge your child with interesting and creative problems and questions.  We also hope to help your child coordinate his large and small motor skills through a variety of planned activities.
