Enrichment Programs

St. John Brebeuf School’s academic program is complemented by a variety of extra-curricular and social activities for our students. Extracurricular music education programs include band, children’s choir, bell choir, and private piano and voice lessons. We have a strong athletic association that organizes and directs, volleyball, basketball, cross country, track and field, soccer, softball and baseball. Scout troops for girls and boys from kindergarten through high school enrich the lives of our students. We are grateful to all who contribute to the success of our school by providing these programs for our students.

Band is offered as an extra curricular activity for grades 4 through 8. An orientation and information session is held at the beginning of each school year.

Art on Parade
Art on Parade is an independent art appreciation course created to enhance the existing curriculum at a school by introducing students to art appreciation through the courtesy of trained volunteer parent docents who visit the classrooms.

The Art on Parade program began in January 1993 through the generous efforts of Georgia Talaganis, the financial donation made by the Parish School Association, and the untiring efforts of volunteer docents. Each classroom and all students in grades K-8 have the opportunity to participate in the art appreciation program.

Docents make four presentations a year by pre-arrangement with the teacher. The class last 45 minutes and covers the artist’s background and style, showing and discussing several of his/her works and results in the creation of a related art project. This year’s artists are: Norman Rockwell, Leonardo DaVinci, and Charles Schultz. For one of the presentations, the docents work with the students on a project from the Gala committee. This project then becomes part of the silent auction at Gala.

Art on Parade connects parents, students, and teachers. The skills children learn from the arts education prepare them for life beyond school.

Accelerated Reader
The Accelerated Reader (AR) program is offered to all SJB students. Once the students have read one of the thousands of books on the AR list they take a short comprehension quiz on the computer, and receive points based on their score.

Children's Choir
The St. John Brebeuf Parish Children’s Choir has open membership to parish students in third through eighth grade.

Our task is to provide music once a month for the 10:45 a.m. Family Mass and to lead the assembly in worship and song. A majority of the Masses are scheduled for the last Sunday of each month. However, the Children’s Choir sings on Christmas Eve Family Mass at 3:00 p.m.

The Children’s Choir rehearses Wednesday afternoons in the Church from 3:00 until 4:15p.m. Our first rehearsal is usually the first Wednesday in September and the final Family Mass is in May.

Throughout the school year, the SJB Parish Children’s Choir is invited to perform at other special events. I.e.: SJB International Night, Holy Name Men’s Club events, PS/A Breakfast with Santa, and area choral festivals. Attendance to most special events is optional.
