A Letter from Dr. Maloney

Dear SJB Families,

Congratulations to our students who are making their First Holy Communion on Saturday! Our third graders were prepared and ready to receive the Holy Eucharist last school year, but the pandemic delayed this sacrament. Please keep the children and their families in your prayers during this most special weekend.

Open House Goes Virtual

On Thursday, September 17 at 7:00, we will launch our Virtual Open House. You will be able to click on pre-recorded videos of your children’s teachers, who will explain our curriculum and other important facets of SJB. You will also be able to view my opening message, a tech update from Mr. Taylor, a blessing from Fr. Meany, and information from our School Advisory Board, P/SA, and Athletic Board. You can also view this information at a later time.

Funds raised from Football Mania Cards can replace the Raffle fee listed on the tuition sheet. If we can make our goal of at least $26,000, the raffle will not need to take place. Please send the link to family and friends out of state. This is a great way to participate in the football season, possibly win some money, and help our school.

If every family can sell at least 14 tickets between now and November 1, we will meet our goal.

Please make checks payable to St. John Brebeuf School. You can share the link to order online: http://www.charitymania.com/give/AA0DF (that is “AAzeroDF”).

Thursday, October 1st-

  • Students should start wearing their school uniforms.
  • Students should start wearing gym uniforms on days they have gym class. They may wear SJB spirit wear, SJB athletic wear, or blue, gray or black (plain, no logos) sweatshirts and sweatpants over their gym uniforms all day on those days, as we will NOT be changing in the locker room.
  • Our hot lunch program begins.

After School Pick-Up- Please remain in or near your cars. We really cannot have parents standing outside and congregating while they wait or after their students come out. Pick a consistent area where you (or anyone picking up your child) will be every day, and let your child know. SJB Staff will make sure your child goes to the correct area. Additionally, please wear a mask during drop off and pick up. It is important to model this for all of our students, and to do everything possible to keep our community safe.

COVID19 Update: If your family or student travels to any state on the Travel Quarantine list, you must quarantine for 14 days. You can find the list here: https://cookcountypublichealth.org/communicable-diseases/covid-19/covid-19-travel-guidance/

If you or your child have any questions about eLearning, please contact the teacher via email. Middle School students should have complete responsibility for contacting their teachers.

eLearners Materials Drop Off and Pickup

On Tuesdays from 2:30-3:00, eLearners can bring in any assignments or materials for their teachers, or pick up any assignments or materials. You (grades Preschool-5th) or your child (Middle School, or if your child wants to) can ask the teacher if there are materials that need to be dropped off or picked up before you make the trip. We can also arrange to receive materials via email.

Use of our school by outside groups: Both Religious Education and Polish School are participating in on-line learning for now. Neither group will be in the school until further notice.

School Pictures are October 8 for in-person learners. For our eLearners, parents may submit a photo to Color Portraits. The photo must be a JPG or JPEG photo taken from the chest up with space on the side and top of the image (not too close up).  Their Image Dept will crop the photo and add our standard background before adding it to the class composite. More information will be shared shortly.

September 25th- No school for students (in-person and e-Learning). We have a staff Professional Development day.

Tuesday Folders- The information we used to send out on Thursdays will now go home on Tuesdays. This is to coincide with our weekly e-Learning materials pick-up.

School Mass- We will be rotating classes/ teams for the Thursday Mass. We started with Middle School the last few weeks. This week we included 3rd grade, as they will be making the First Communion on Saturday. Third grade will also attend Mass next week, so they can take communion for the first time at a school Mass. I want to make sure there is plenty of space while reducing the number of students in the church. We will most likely keep Kindergarten and first grade back at school, at least for the first half of the year. We will reevaluate in January.

Early Dismissal- If you need to pick up children from school early, please let the teacher and office know ahead of time. Then please call our front office (847) 966-3266 when you arrive in the parking lot. I recommend that you arrive earlier than you normally would. We will call the children to the office when you are in the parking lot. An SJB staff member will bring the children to the door, where you will retrieve them and sign them out on our sign-out sheet.

Virtus training is being offered online right now. If you are not already Virtus trained, please take advantage of this online opportunity to participate in the training and become certified. Select “Chicago (Archdiocese)” when you begin the registration process. Here is the link for registering: https://www.virtusonline.org/virtus/reg_2.cfm?theme=0

Students may continue to wear Catholic school appropriate shorts and t-shirts, or spirit wear, through the rest of September.
