A Letter from Dr. Maloney

Dear SJB Families,

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I am reflecting on how much I have to be thankful for this year. I am so very thankful for all of you! You are working in partnership with us at school to keep everyone safe and healthy. I am thankful for our SJB school staff, who continue to go far above and beyond for our students. I am thankful for our parish, with a Pastor and staff who support our school so strongly. I am so grateful for your children- our Jaguars renew my sense of purpose every day with their energy, focus, and excitement! They are truly blessings.

Covid Reminders

Thanksgiving Travel: We will be celebrating Thanksgiving under conditions that have not existed in our lifetime. Because of the steep increase in positive Covid cases, the latest Cook County Department of Health recommendation no longer lists specific states but has issued this statement:

"CCDPH recommends avoiding all non-essential travel. All persons entering into suburban Cook County from outside of suburban Cook County should quarantine for 14 days."

You can find the updated list here: https://cookcountypublichealth.org/communicable-diseases/covid-19/covid-19-travel-guidance/

This means that anyone leaving Cook County, and certainly the state of Illinois, to visit others should quarantine for 14 days upon your return to Cook County. (Note: this does not apply to picking up a child from college, or job-related travel, as the CCPDH issued waivers regarding these situations.)

If you are traveling out of the county and/or out of state during the Thanksgiving holiday, please notify the office AND your child's teacher. Your child will participate in e-Learning for 14 days upon your return.

After the Christmas holidays: The Archdiocese’s Office of Catholic Schools has determined that all schools in the Archdiocese will use remote learning for all students between January 4-January 18. The reason for this is to allow families and staff the time to visit important people in their lives, and then safely quarantine for the required 14 days. In-person classes will resume on January 19. St. John Brebeuf School will not be able to offer extended care during that time.

Parent/Teacher Conferences November 23 and 24- Our P/T conferences are being held virtually this year. Contact your child’s teacher if you have questions.

Dress for the weather- Students will continue to go outside for recess and PE class throughout the winter as long as possible in safe (but cold) weather. Please make sure your child has appropriate coats, hats, gloves/mittens, flannel/sweatpants/leggings under skirts, footwear, etc.

Chromebooks- If any of our recent alumni are not using their Chromebooks, please consider donating them back to our school. It is difficult to acquire Chromebooks due to the pandemic.

Any parent or grandparent who wishes to volunteer in school, chaperone field trips, coach, or attend holiday parties during the school day must be Virtus trained. Virtus training is being offered on-line right now. Select “Chicago (Archdiocese)” when you begin the registration process.
