A Letter from Dr. Maloney

A Letter From Dr. Maloney

Dear SJB Families,

Summer has begun! Our 2019-2020 school year has officially ended. As I stated in my last newsletter, this has been the most interesting and challenging school year I have ever seen as an educator. These unprecedented times brought out the best in our SJB community, as we worked together to provide the best experiences for our Jaguars.

We will open for our first day of school on Monday, August 24, in our school building!

We have been planning how to provide a safe environment for our students and staff as we start our new school year. At this time, the Office of Cathoic Schools has determined that we will take the “cohort” approach with our students. This means we will be working with our students in their grade level teams that we established last year as “cohorts”. This will decrease the amount of people students come into contact with, and decrease the number of areas that cohorts occupy. We are NOT planning to have our students wear masks- we will maintain safety with the cohort approach. Procedures will include the following and more:

  • We will isolate areas for the cohorts, including but not limited to classrooms, entrance and exit doors, bathrooms, and lunchroom seating.
  • Our Specials teachers (PE, Music, Art, Spanish, and Technology) will travel to the students’ homeroom classes to provide instruction.
  • Students will have their own supply of manipulatives that they keep in a box assigned specifically to them.
  • Students will not share materials.
  • In order to provide more space for students, we will have two lunch/recess blocks instead of one. Students will be spaced apart at the lunchroom tables.
  • Desks will be arranged in classrooms individually, with distance between each desk. Only one student will ever occupy each specific desk.
  • We will minimize students switching classrooms, and have the teachers switch classrooms instead, as much as possible.
  • Students and staff will increase handwashing.
  • Students will bring their own water bottles from home. There will be no drinking from the water fountain, but students can refill their bottles as necessary.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing of the building will occur each day.
  • If we should be required to enter into a period of e-Learning as the year progresses, we will maintain our regular school schedule, from 8:15-3:00, each day. Students will have their academic and specials classes each day at their regular time, with the teachers providing instruction, work time, and feedback during each class period.

I will continue to share information regarding the safe start to our school year. We are very excited about being with our Jaguars every day!

Please register your children, if you have not already done so.

In addition to monthly tuition, we will now collect registration fees through FACTS! The following fees will be collected through FACTS: registration, technology, lunch supervision, field trip and graduation. You will receive an invoice for these fees from FACTS after June 15, and the invoices are due by August 3, paid directly to FACTS. Tuition payments for the 2020-2021 school year should start in July 2020 and be collected until the June 2021 payment. Any unused field trip fees will be applied to your tuition balance at the end of the year. Please email Mrs. Giordano at ggiordano@sjbschool.org with questions.

Virtus training is being offered online right now. If you are not already Virtus trained, please take advantage of this online opportunity to participate in the training and become certified. Select “Chicago (Archdiocese)” when you begin the registration process. Here is the link for registering: https://www.virtusonline.org/virtus/reg_2.cfm?theme=0

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:00-1:00. We will be closed the week of July 6, and again the week of July 20. If you need to visit our office in person, we ask that you come on Tuesday or Wednesday, or call for an appointment.

VIRTUAL SUMMER CAMP: We are offering a “virtual summer camp” for free for our Jaguars! On our home page, we will be placing a file with activities for you children to have fun with during the summer. The activities include a materials list, a “lesson plan”, and on-line links.

I truly miss all of our Jaguars!! I can’t wait to see you all in August!

Have a wonderful summer. Blessings,

Dr. Maloney
