Awards Day at St. John Brebeuf School
Awards Day took place recently and many students were honored on this afternoon of excellence, which occurred in Church. Among the most distinguished honorees were a select number of eighth grade students. These students have, over the course of their time at SJB, showed superiority in such things as citizenship, academics, and character. Congratulations go to Melissa A., Sarah R., Jan S., Christopher B., who were each the recipient of a Citizenship Award, and Andrew C., and Alex P., who were winners of an American Legion Award. We are all so proud of you and wish you good luck and success in high school and beyond!

May Crowning at St. John Brebeuf
May Crowning took place in church at St. John Brebeuf. For the blessed event, the SJB eighth graders are given the honor and privilege of participating in this event, praying the living rosary. Dressed in their best attire, each of the 42 eighth graders encircled the church holding a rose and a rosary.
Each eighth grader was required to write an essay about Mary and how she has influenced their lives in one way or another. Prior to May Crowning, teachers at SJB were asked to read these anonymous essays and evaluate them for prayerfulness, original thought, and conventions. Based on this system, the court and crowner of Mary were determined. Members of the court also received the honor of reading their essay during the living rosary.
Andrew Cichon greeted everyone in church and the new Bell Choir performed "On this Day," which was cantored beautifully by SJB's music teacher, Miss Urban. Court member, Mimi started off our praying of the rosary with the "I Believe in God" prayer, and fellow court member, Luisa , was the first to read her essay to the students, teachers, and parents in attendance. Alex P. was next to read her essay, which focused on her seeing Mary as a pseudo mom and as an inspiration to her. Other students chosen to read their essay as part of the court were Lulu, who crowned Mary, Katie, Steven, Robyn, and Melissa.
After the living rosary was prayed, the eighth graders took their seats, as the court entered the church. Walking in together were Alex P. and Mimi, Melody and Chelsea, Steven and Katie, Meegan and Tom, and Melissa and Andrew. Processing in alone and bearing the floral crown for Mary was Luisa and following her was Lulu, who had the honor of placing the crown of flowers on Mary. Following her crowning of Mary, Lulu read her essay to those in attendance.
The ceremony concluded with the Bell Choir performing "Bring Flowers of the Fairest," which was also cantored by Miss Urban. May Crowning is essentially the beginning of all the wonderful and exciting events that our eighth graders participate in throughout the months of May and June and was done beautifully.

Students and Teachers Shine at SJB Student Council's Talent Show
Recently, several St. John Brebeuf School students participated in the Student Council sponsored Talent Show. Prior to Spring Break, auditions were held in several classrooms and the auditioning students performed their talent for groups of teachers and staff. Many students were chosen for this always entertaining and fun event.
As a surprise to the students, the SJB faculty and staff took the stage almost immediately after the Talent Show began. Dressed alike in blue jeans, black shirts, and donning sunglasses, teachers and staff were up with their rendition of “The Evolution of Dance.” From the moment the staff took the stage in the PMC, the SJB students were exuberant and anticipating seeing their teachers performing for everyone. At the conclusion of “The Evolution of Dance,” the staff received cheers and a thunderous ovation from their students for what was arguably the highlight of the afternoon.
Many students participated in the show, displaying their talents of singing, dancing, magic, and instrument playing for their classmates, friends, and teachers to see. Third grader, Haley, kicked off the afternoon on the piano, followed by a very unique and creative tinikling dance by eighth graders Melody, Danielle, Angela, and Chelsea. The show continued with some cool magic tricks performed by fifth graders Kyle, Matthew, Danny, and Connor. Seventh grader, Heather’s rendition of Taylor Swift’s “You Belong with Me” was excellent, as was classmate, Mark's version of “God Help the Outcasts” from Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Amidst all of the song, dance, and instrument performances, none made the audience laugh more than eighth graders, Gino and Sean, who performed an extremely creative rendition of “Umbrella,” by Rihanna and Chris Brown. Complete with a fog machine, the last skit of this year’s talent show was a huge hit, capping off a very successful 2010 SJB Talent Show.
