Final Peacekeepers Honored

This year at SJB we continued the Peacekeepers Program.  This is the highest honor a student can achieve at St. John Brebeuf School.  The program honored students who did what they knew was right even if it was not popular.  It recognized those who treated everyone they met in a special way.  It demanded that the student be good, honorable, and honest.

At each of our end of quarter assemblies, we honored our peacekeepers with a medal and an out of uniform.  We also devoted a bulletin board to our peacekeepers so that everyone would know who they were and what they had done to achieve this award.  The Peacekeepers were recognized in the weekly bulletin.  This year, we have honored 60 Peacekeepers from Kindergarten through 8th grade.

At the Awards Assembly we honored our final group of peacekeepers.  We thanked them for the spirit of peace they spread through their words and actions.  We congratulate the following peacekeepers:

Grade 8 Peter Velez and Grace Rueve
Grade 7 Emily Fenn and Mane Nikolaou
Grade 6 Alexandra Guzek and Angela Poothurail
Grade 5 Gregory Mendez-Weeks, Ania Rostkowski, Katherine Gittings
Grade 4 Veronica Lane and Matt Voss
Grade 3 Isabel Resurreccion and Anne Pilac
Grade 2 Iza Rostkowski and Stephanie Casado
Grade 1 James Mastalerz and Michael Luisi
Kindergarten Haley Cychosz, Jimmy Murphy and Anya Cronin

Awards Day Assembly

On Friday, May 23, 2008, the students of St. John Brebeuf School, grades first through eighth took part in an Awards Day assembly which recognized all the hard work and talents of our students.  Parents, faculty, and students supported the winners and as an SJB community we are very proud of all the hard work which our students have put forth in order to receive the various awards.

The assembly first recognized the SJB altar servers followed by the WSJB news crews which have dedicated their time to helping out to make masses and news casts very successful.  The next group of awards was given to the students for their ability to do well in physical education as well as SJB athletics.  Several students were mentioned for their strong effort and time spent in making their athletic season a successful one.

Being a positive peacekeeper is one thing that each SJB student strives to attain during their school year.  Peacekeepers for the 4th quarter were awarded a medal for all their strong qualities and attributes which they showed through the past couple of weeks.  In addition, 479 students of SJB nominated a special peacekeeper.  Mrs. Mary Stachura received a peacekeeper medal for all her hard work and service to SJB School.  We thank you again Mrs. Stachura for all you do for us.

In addition to these awards, several others which include regional and state Sience Fair, environmental poster contest, dollars for scholars, optimist handwriting contest, honor roll, accelerated reader, battle of the books, family Mass choir,  and school safety patrol were recognized.  All areas included several outstanding students that have great talents and dedication to making each activity a successful outcome.

The most exciting news of the awards ceremony was the announcement made by Mrs. Baer stating the new Student Council executive board for the 2008-2009 school year.  Shannon McGinnis will be president, Jessica O’Grady won vice-president, Nick Bartley won Secretary, Mimi Sperl won Treasurer, and Cassidy McTague won School Spirit.  Congratulations to all and we look forward to an exciting school year in the fall.

And lastly, the American Legion Award was presented to two eighth grade students who have portrayed outstanding qualities and have done a great deal throughout their years at SJB.  Congratulations to Amanda Steckly, and Kevin Neuhengen.  In addition to this award, four eighth grade students were recognized for the Citizenship Award.  Congratulations to Jean Manianglung and runner up Grace Rueve, as well as Robbie Getty and runner-up Justin Komosa for exemplifying positive qualities for this award.

Thank you for all who made this Awards Ceremony a successful event for the students and entire community of St. John Brebeuf School.  We know that our students will continue to put forth their best and beyond in making this year as well as next year a successful one.

June

The sun is rich
There's Little League,
And gladly pays
Hopscotch, the creek,
In golden hours,
And after supper,
Silver days.
Hide-and-seek.
And long green weeks
The live-long light
That never end.
Is like a dream,
School's out. The time
And freckles come
is ours to spend.
Like flies to cream.

Have a fun-filled, safe summer.

See you in August.
